INTRODUCTION:

Let us consider that you want to go to your bank to deposit some money, Now what you will do? You would like to know the working hours of the Bank so that you can plan accordingly to visit the bank and deposit your money.
Likewise, the Stock Market also has certain timings during which an investor can invest their money.
Each working day in the market is divided into several sessions and the investors are allowed to buy/sell during certain sessions only. Let us see about it in detail.

MARKET SESSIONS:

Pre Open Market Sessions: 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM

            Prior to market opening, the Pre-Open Market is designed to stabilize a market that has experienced heavy volatility because of a major announcement or event that happened overnight. The Investors are not encouraged to participate in these sessions. It is conducted on both NSE and BSE.
It has three sessions:
  1. Order Entry Session: From 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM (8 Minutes): In this session, all the orders are placed to buy and sell stocks. The orders can be placed, modified, or canceled in this session. After this, no further orders are accepted.
  2. Order Matching Session: From 9:08 AM to 9:12 AM (4 Minutes): In this session, matching the order placed is done. calculation of share price for normal market session is done in this 4 minutes. During order matching, no modifications are allowed.
  3. Buffer Session: From 9:12 AM to 9:15 AM (3 Minutes): This three minute is a silent session to facilitate the transition from a pre-opening market session to a normal market session.

Normal Market Sessions: 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM

            In this session, the market is open to all the participants of the stock market. the session starts from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM during the weekdays (Monday to Friday). During this session, order placement, orders modification, and cancellations are all possible via the brokers. All the buy/sell orders are matched with the same stock price and transfer initiation takes place during this session. And at 3:30 PM the market will be closed and no further participation of investors is encouraged by brokers.

Post-Closing Session: 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM

            The official Post-closing session begins at 3:40 PM and continues till 4:00 PM. From, 3.30 PM to 3.40 PM, the closing price of stocks is determined by taking the weighted normal of the stock prices exchanged between 03:00 PM and 03:30 PM. Then the post-closing session begins, In this session, one can still place buy and sell orders, However, the orders are affirmed provided that there are adequate quantities of buyers and sellers on the market. During this session, stop losses are not allowed.

MARKET TIMINGS WRAP UP: 

The Markets in India are open for trading all weekdays from Monday to Friday. 
The specific timings to note are:

  1.  Pre-open session: between 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM. 
  2.  Regular trading session: between 09:15 hrs to 15:30 hrs.
  3.  Block Deal Session Timings: In this session block deals of trading are initiated. Morning Block Deal Window: [08:45 AM to 09:00 AM]. Afternoon Block Deal Window: [02:05 PM to 2:20 PM].
  4.  The Closing Session: between 15.40 hrs and 16.00 hrs.
